SAAS, or cloud computing, on-demand applications or whatever you want to call it, is increasingly important in the enterprise. One software-as-a-service company, Innotas, provides an on-demand Project Portfolio Management package specifically designed for IT organizations. Customers include Forbes, Hamilton Beach and Simon & Schuster, as well as financial services, health care, retail, technology, telecommunications and energy organizations. Businesses are looking for software offerings that incorporate Web 2.0 features and functionality while supporting their specific business needs right out of the “box”. This has led to a slew of vendors delivering software over the web, as a service. SaaS offerings are often cheaper, require no patches or upgrades and can be accessed from any location with access to the internet. While many software vendors are adopting this model, at least as one option, businesses want more and more customization and flexibility, while IT departments are looking for assurances that data is secure.

On a flight between Seattle and Tokyo. I’ve just put down The Big Switch, and decided it’s time to write about cloud computing and how identity management is going to play a key role for the success of the new paradigm. As you go though this post, please remember that (as always) you are reading my personal opinions/views and not a press release from my employer
