Layar’s Reality Browser for the iPhone is finally available!

October 16, 2009 by Michael Marlatt · Leave a Comment

Layar’s Reality Browser has finally arrived stateside and is now available for iPhone users. If you have been following the developments in mobile technology and augmented reality, then you will agree that Layar takes mobile browsing to the next level.

Why all the hype around Augmented Reality?

Augmented Reality (AR) is generating buzz as the “next killer mobile app” and for good reason. The trend in augmented reality is gaining greater momentum, which is evident by the many new vendors entering this space. Take a look at Wikitude, IBM’s Seer app, TwittARound, Wildlife Fate Campagin, or the cool AR + 3-D campaigns by Hyperfactory, etc. and you will quickly understand why there’s so much hype around this new technology. Whether you are shopping, searching for the nearest restaurant, gas station, or job-hunting on-the-go, AR has the potential to offer a little something for everyone.

Atlanta’s first ever iPhone and iPod unconference event

July 15, 2009 by Michael Marlatt · Leave a Comment

In less than three days, I’ll be in mobile-heaven as Atlanta hosts its first-ever iPhone and iPod unconference event. However, don’t be fooled by the conference name. The organizers have planned for two separate ‘tracks’ at the event. The first track will focus heavily on iPhone & iPod devices, while the second track focuses on all other mobiles, Android, Palm Pre, Windows Mobile, etc. According to Jonathan Freeman (conference organizer), there are 300+ registered participants and many more expected to sign-up.

My advice? If you are truly passionate about mobile in general (e.g., iPhones, Androids, Palm Pres, Window Mobiles, Blackberries, design, mobile gaming, coding, mobile media, etc), this event was intended for YOU. The doors will open at 8:00am on Saturday, July 18th but feel free to get there early. I will actually be helping to process many of the incoming attendees so make sure to look me up at the entry point and say hello!

Want a jump start? Grab your mobile, TXT ‘MARLATT‘ to 41411 to get my contact details.

Hope to see you at the event! Oh, and of course, don’t forget to follow @MobileCampATL on Twitter. To register for the FREE unconference event, Click here.

Augmented Reality (AR) coming to an iPhone near you?

July 7, 2009 by Michael Marlatt · Leave a Comment

Acrossair, the makers of the TVGuide.co.uk iPhone app recently built Nearest Tube, one of the first augmented reality apps to go live in the iPhone AppStore. Nearest Tube offers similar augmented reality (AR) “coolness” previously featured by Layar. While it doesn’t seek to address topics such as mobile recruiting or job-searching on the go, it does serve a simple (yet important) function by helping Londoners locate their nearest subway via their iPhone. Nearest Tube is only available to Apple iPhone 3GS users and will be made availble as soon as Apple approves the app.

Expect more AR apps for mobile devices in the future. For now, check out the video below

Location Based Service (LBS), the future of job-searching on the go?

July 2, 2009 by Michael Marlatt · 1 Comment

Increasingly, we are seeing a proliferation of mobile applications that are focused on delivering highly personalized services. One of the key ways in which companies are delivering relevant content to mobile devices is through location-based service (LBS) applications.

There are two LBS mobile apps I believe are worth mentioning:

1.
JobCompass, is a free iPhone app that offers job-seekers the ability to easily view jobs within their immediate proximity. The app is completely intuitive. To start, users simply enter the job search keywords, then specify radius. The app does all the heavy lifting. See video below…

2. Layar, is the world’s first mobile augmented reality (AR) browser. In layman terms, Layar enables users to view the general surroundings (via a camera phone) and instantly retrieve “real-time” data based on a user’s geolocation and where the camera is being pointed.

Unlike JobCompass, Layar was not specifically designed with the job-seeker in mind. However, it only takes a brief review to understand the value this application offers to job-seekers, as well as recruiters. Imagine the ability to scan your physical surroundings, target key companies within your local proximity, and then view a list of real-time job openings for your target client. Layar is just that slick and it would offer an advantage for account managers working out in the field, or job-seekers looking for new employment. (*Watch the video below at the 6:00 minute mark for more on this topic).

Layar is a free app that is only available for the T-Mobile G1, HTC Magic and other Android phones in Android Market for the Netherlands. Layar will be made available to the US, Germany, and UK markets later this year. Like many other iPhone enthusiasts, I’m still waiting for someone to create the iPhone equivalent for this amazing application. For now, enjoy this short video on Layar

Evernote.com announces the latest release for iPhone & iPod users

October 30, 2008 by Michael Marlatt · 2 Comments

What is Evernote?

Evernote allows you to easily capture information in any environment using whatever device or platform you find most convenient, and makes this information accessible and searchable at any time, from anywhere.

The latest release of Evernote for iPhone, version 1.4, introduces our most (MOST) requested feature: offline notes. We call them Favorites, and here’s how they work.

When viewing a note on the iPhone or iPod Touch, you’ll see a little gray star in left corner of the note title. Once the note is fully loaded, tap the star and that note instantly becomes a favorite. It’s now quickly accessible any time, even offline. To view your favorites, click on “Favorites” in the tab bar along the bottom of the application.

Great for the iPod Touch

This feature is particularly useful for iPod Touch users. Now you will be able to view selected notes even when outside WiFi range.

Planes, trains, and automobiles

With Favorites, you can access selected notes any time you like, no matter where you find yourself. So, whether you’re heading to the corner deli or to New Delhi, the information you need is always close at hand.
