The mobile is predicted to play a significant role in how we access the internet by 2020. Click the image to watch the video, or view blog post for more details...

Keys, money, and mobile device – these are the three most common things people never leave home without. While we may occasionally run out of the house without our wallet or keys, we almost never leave the house without our mobile device. Why is that? Well, if you really stop and think about it, our mobile device is more than just a phone; it’s our lifeline to the world. Let’s face it, mobile is our second shadow, always-on, and rarely does it ever leave our side. It fills a void. It provides us the ultimate sense of security, comfort, and most importantly it keeps us connected to the people who matter most.

According to a survey on The Future of the Internet III by Pew Research, the following were predictions about technology and its roles in the year 2020:

- The mobile device will be the primary connection tool to the internet for most people in the world in 2020.

- The transparency of people and organizations will increase, but that will not necessarily yield more personal integrity, social tolerance, or forgiveness.

- Voice recognition and touch user-interfaces with the internet will be more prevalent and accepted by 2020.

- Those working to enforce intellectual property law and copyright protection will remain in a continuing arms race, with the crackers who will find ways to copy and share content without payment.

- The divisions between personal time and work time and between physical and virtual reality will be further erased for everyone who is connected, and the results will be mixed in their impact on basic social relations.

- Next-generation engineering of the network to improve the current internet architecture is more likely than an effort to rebuild the architecture from scratch.

Today, we see a lot discussion around topics such as mobile marketing, mobile advertising, mobile search, SMS services, barcode technology, mobile video, augmented reality, touch screen technology, location based services (LBS), and the list goes on. However, I believe we are still only scratching the surface of what mobile has to offer. Who knows what the next 10+ years of mobile innovation will bring us. I am not sure about you but I’m certainly excited.

Isn’t it time to rethink our perspective on mobile? What do you think?

Imagine a future where we are able to harness the power of collective intelligence through simply speaking our thoughts. While today’s technology has not quite allowed us to reach that point, there is a company that is well on their way to making this a reality.

Back in February of this year, Michael Callahan, Co-Founder of Ambient Corporation, introduced the world to an amazing neckband technology called the Audeo. While still in its infancy, the Audeo essentially translates thought into speech by picking up nerve signals. The signals are wirelessly sent to a computer which are then converted into words spoken by a computerized voice.

The Google powered T-Mobile’s G1 smart phone was launched yesterday, heralding what some analysts called a paradigm shift in how we will access and consume information.

A report by Universal McCann found that consumption of content outside of websites has increased by 153% in the last nine months. 53% of online users are consuming content outside of a publisher’s site.

Compared to a year ago, the way I consumed content has changed significantly from visiting websites to getting it delivered through RSS feeds, Twitter, messengers, emails and my mobile phone. I now expect information to come to me wherever I am, whenever I need, delivered through the medium of my choice.

If you are a talent solutions provider whose business model depends solely on candidates visiting your website, it’s time to rethink strategy. Ditto for employers. Recruiting in the brave new world (populated by smart phones) will be more about reaching talent wherever they are, with whatever medium of their choosing.

A new graph of the Gartner hype cycle for emerging technologies has been popping up on a variety of blogs. If you haven’t seen it yet, the graph charts the path that many nascent technologies take from launch, through irrational exuberance, through disillusionment and ultimately to that ‘a-ha moment’ that leads to measured and rational mainstream adoption. It’s classic ‘Crossing the Chasm’ stuff…
